Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level extension is the sole TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing 3rd-level names remained online.
